About 2–2.5 hours west to the capital and the Colonial Zone — the oldest European city in the Americas. Door-to-door, on your schedule.
Check prices & book →Santo Domingo lies about 165–200 km west of Punta Cana airport, a drive of roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. The journey runs along the Autovía del Coral and the eastern highway into the capital, finishing in city traffic that varies with the time of day and exactly where in town you're headed.
It's the longest of the popular routes, so comfort matters: a private transfer means one car, your luggage, air conditioning, and a single uninterrupted ride from the terminal to your hotel door.
Distance: ~165–200 km | Journey time: ~2–2.5 hrs | Private from: $160 total | Airport: Punta Cana International (PUJ)
Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the Americas, and its Zona Colonial — a UNESCO World Heritage site — is the headline draw, with cobbled streets, the first cathedral in the New World, and the Alcázar de Colón. Travellers also head to the capital for business, for the Malecón seafront, or to connect with a cruise at the Sans Souci port.
A private transfer reaches any of these — just give the exact hotel name and street address, as the Colonial Zone's narrow one-way streets reward a driver who knows them.
Santo Domingo is a big city with many districts (Zona Colonial, Piantini, Naco, the Malecón). Include your hotel name and full street address at booking so the driver routes straight there without circling the old town.
There's a genuinely cheap option on this route: the Expreso Bávaro coach links the Punta Cana area with Santo Domingo for a small fraction of a private fare. The trade-offs are real, though — it runs on its own timetable, makes stops, takes longer, and drops you at a city bus terminal where you'll still need a taxi to your hotel.
If you're a solo budget traveller with time to spare, the bus is worth considering. For families, anyone on a schedule, or arriving late, a private transfer that leaves when you land and goes straight to your door is the easier call.

Premium vehicle for business travel or a more comfortable long ride.
After immigration and baggage at PUJ's open-air terminal, walk out into arrivals and find your driver holding a sign with your name. Don't engage with anyone offering rides as you exit — your booked driver will be waiting. If you can't find them, call the number on your confirmation first, especially before the long drive to the capital.
